What REAL ID is
- REAL ID is a federally compliant version of your state driver’s license or ID that meets post‑9/11 security standards.travel.dod+1

Why it matters now
- As of May 7, 2025, adults 18+ need a REAL ID‑compliant license/ID or other acceptable ID to board domestic flights.travel.dod+1
- Starting February 1, 2026, if you show up to fly without acceptable ID, TSA’s new ConfirmID system can charge a $45 identity‑verification fee and add 10–30+ minutes at security.usatoday+3
- Getting REAL ID now means one DMV trip on your schedule, instead of a last‑minute scramble before a flight—especially important for adults with ADHD who may find paperwork and tight deadlines overwhelming.dmv.ny+2
What happens if you don’t get REAL ID
If you keep only a standard (non‑REAL‑ID) license or ID:
- You cannot use that card alone to fly within the U.S.; you must bring a passport or another TSA‑approved ID or risk being denied at the checkpoint.boundless+1
- From February 1, 2026, travelers without acceptable ID may need to pay the nonrefundable $45 ConfirmID fee to verify identity, and they can still miss flights because of the extra time.cnn+3
