People with ADHD often struggle with sleep issues, whether it is difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, problems waking up, or staying awake during the day. In addition, serious sleep disorders have been shown to be common in ADHD populations. There are many reasons for this. Many aspects of ADHD also lend themselves to poor sleep hygiene, which only exacerbates ADHD symptoms. Proper assessment is essential, as well as developing ADHD-friendly interventions for sleep problems and disorders. Case examples will be discussed, including the speaker’s own experience with ADHD and sleep disorders.

Dr. Roberto Olivardia is a Clinical Instructor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. He maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Lexington, MA, where he specializes in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). He also specializes in the treatment of eating disorders in boys and men. He has taught courses at the University of Massachusetts Boston and Boston College. He has presented at many talks, webinars and conferences around the country, including the CHADD and ADDA conferences annually.
